Most people assume a missing tooth is only a cosmetic concern, but waiting to replace it can affect far more than your smile’s appearance.

Why a Missing Tooth Is More Urgent Than You Think
A gap in your smile might seem like a minor issue you can deal with later, but delaying tooth replacement can quietly create bigger problems over time. The longer you wait, the more your oral health can deteriorate in ways you might not immediately notice.
Here is what can happen when a missing tooth goes unreplaced:
- Bone loss: Your jawbone needs the stimulation of a tooth root to stay strong. Without it, the bone begins to shrink.
- Shifting teeth: Neighboring teeth start to drift into the open space, affecting your bite and alignment.
- Increased decay risk: Shifted teeth create harder-to-clean areas where bacteria thrive.
- Changes in facial appearance: Bone loss can cause your face to look sunken or aged over time.
- Chewing difficulties: Each missing tooth puts extra strain on your remaining teeth, wearing them down faster.
The good news is that prosthodontic solutions like dental implants and bridges can stop these problems in their tracks. The sooner you act, the more options you have available to you.

Treatments like implants, bridges, crowns, and dentures are all options we can explore with you based on your specific situation.
What happens to your jawbone when you leave a missing tooth unreplaced?
Your jawbone relies on the stimulation of a tooth root to stay strong. Without that stimulation, the bone begins to shrink over time. This can eventually cause your face to look sunken or aged, which is why we encourage you to seek treatment sooner rather than later. Research from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research continues to advance our understanding of how jawbone loss progresses and how it can be prevented.
What is the difference between a dental bridge and a dental implant?
A dental implant is ideal for replacing a single or multiple missing teeth and is the best option for preserving your jawbone while looking completely natural. A dental bridge works well when you have one or more adjacent missing teeth and helps restore your bite while preventing neighboring teeth from shifting.
How does a prosthodontist create a treatment plan for restoring your smile?
We start with a thorough exam and then build a personalized treatment plan designed around your needs. We walk you through every step, including timelines and costs, so you always know what to expect throughout your care with us.
Are partial dentures a good option if you still have some natural teeth remaining?
Yes, partial dentures are a great fit for you if you have several missing teeth but still have natural teeth remaining. They are an affordable, removable solution that fills multiple gaps and helps restore your ability to eat and speak comfortably.
